Cochituate Lake - Natick MA Project Challenge

Over the years, the US Army Soldiers System Center, which is located on the shores of Lake Cochituate in Natick MA, suffered from several accidental transformer incidents which spilled PCB laden waters into Lake Cochituate. With this being a recreational area, the cleanup of the PCB’s became a number one priority.

ISSI was contracted by the US Army, through Charter Environmental of Boston MA, to provide the remedial dredging, treatment, containment for the ultimate removal of the contaminated materials.

Once the Lake was dredged, ISSI went back in and capped the areas with a 6” sand layer cap. ISSI worked with the Army, Charter and the engineers to design and implement a safe and cost effective way to capture, treat and return clean water to Lake Cochituate and minimize the disposal costs for the end materials.

ISSI developed the Optimizer treatment system and an air induction system that optimized the contamination capture in the Geotextile tubes. The effluent water was then returned to the Lake through a sand filter system. Although carbon filters were onsite if needed, the Optimiser System proved to so effective, the Carbon filters were not used.

The system worked so well that the materials passed the paint filter test within days after the dredging was complete and was able to be trucked almost immediately.

ISSI operated under strict EPA Superfund guidelines and stringent hazardous materials handling criteria.
